Ethiopia Amaro Gayo selected for #TEDcoffee
Last week was great for Vancouver, and not just because Grouse has a great base and the Canucks are on a bit of roll. Last week, TED – the iconic summit of the world’s top minds in technology, entertainment and design (TED for short) — announced it is moving its annual West Coast conference to Vancouver and Whistler, BC in 2014, after 29 years in California.
This is a HUGE win as Canada now becomes a TED Host Country and Vancouver a TED Host City. The benefits and chest pumping began almost immediately, and with good reason given the TED global brand, buzz and cachet.
Why Vancouver? According to BC Business, Chris Anderson, the magazine publisher whose non-profit company, The Sapling Foundation, oversees the event, called Vancouver “one of the world’s greatest cities, combining a thriving culture of innovation with glorious nature.” TED reps said they also loved the Vancouver convention centre and its commitment to LEED certification.
Which brings us to the second big announcement from last week: our signature Ethiopia Amaro Gayo coffee will be served at TED2013 later this month in Long Beach and Palm Springs, CA.
The coffees to be served at TED (Long Beach) and TEDActive (Palm Springs) from Feb. 25 to March 1 were selected from submissions for single cup pour-over service in an open process hosted by Allegro Coffee Company and overseen by The Barista Guild of America and the Roasters Guild, two organizations of culinary professionals within the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA).
Our Ethiopia Amaro Gayo was selected from among eight coffees in the running for single cup pour-over service. In addition, our Ethiopia Amaro Gayo will be included in a one-time only espresso blend, which will also consist of Blue Bottle’s Ethiopia Kemgin and Deeper Roots’s Guatemala La Armonia Hermosa.
We are extremely honoured to be included in this elite group of coffee roasters and specialty coffee community for TED2013. This is a total team win for Salt Spring Coffee.
The Specialty Coffee Association of America and the Roasters Guild did an excellent job of bringing together a selection of exceptional coffees through #TEDcoffee. The selection process was both open and collaborative.
And a special shout out goes to our own Nelson Teskey and Stamatis Papadopoulos who worked very hard to find the “sweet spot” of our Ethiopia Amaro Gayo. We must also acknowledge all the great work done by our co-op and farmer partners at coffee origin who are continually finding ways to improve the coffee we buy from them.
