The 5th Annual Garlic Festival: This Sunday, August 25
As part of our membership in 1% For the Planet this year, Salt Spring Coffee has donated $15,000 — along with a month of time helping out on the farm— to the Sharing Farm Society in Richmond. Volunteers are essential to bringing the Sharing Farm and the community closer together and to building the skillset of sustainable farmers for future generations. This summer, our time on the farm was spent harvesting garlic, in preparation for this summer’s 5th annual Garlic Festival, with the funds raised going to the Sharing Farm Society. The Festival, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Sunday, August 25 at Terra Nova Park in Richmond, from 10am to 3pm.
We’ll spare you the jokes about garlic breath, and just assure you that this community event will be a good time for the whole family. The day will include:
- over 1,000 lbs of fresh, organically-grown garlic for sale
- live entertainment
- exclusive garlic creations baked in our outdoor cob oven by Steveston Pizza
- cooking demonstrations from Chef Quang Dang at West Restaurant
- garlic growing workshops
- Growing Chefs’ gardening and cooking-themed craft station
- other activities, including for the kids and more.
The crowd pleaser? Artisan garlic ice cream from our friends at Earnest Ice Cream. Delicious! We hope to see you all there.
Want to know more about The Sharing Farm Society? For over a decade, the Society has been growing organic produce year-round, for Richmond families in need. They’ve donated well over 200,000 pounds of food in that time, and this year, our donation covered the purchase of a tractor and produce cooler, tools that helped the farmers navigate the particularly wet, heavy condition of the soil, helping to bring more food to families in need. They are always on the lookout for volunteers, so visit their website if you are interested in helping out.
