Supporting Women in Coffee
March 8, 2021
Happy International Women’s Day–Here’s to breaking down barriers!
We understand that coffee is a male-dominated industry which is why we’re committed to providing equal opportunities to women.
Mickey McLeod (Co-founder) and Jessie Gullet (Senior Manager, Coffee Quality and Production) visited La Labor, Honduras just before the pandemic and spent a lot of time getting to know the women at Amprocal, a women-run coffee co-op.
The women at Amprocal said that working at a women-run coffee co-op gave them the opportunity to learn new skills such as cupping and roasting which they would not have had if they were at a mixed group co-op. It made them feel liberated and free to learn new skills and take control of their economic situation.
We learned that when women work, they will invest 90% of their income back into their families. This results in more access to resources, education, healthcare and ultimately the healthy and sustainable growth of their community.
The trip was a great experience that helped us understand how we can positively impact communities by investing in women. Mickey said that "It was wonderful to see such an amazing group of women dedicated to quality and value extension by roasting their coffee to sell locally as well in their cafe."
We are excited to partner with the women at Amprocal and will be receiving our first shipment of coffee soon!
